Edward Douthett

Edward B. Douthett, Jr. is an Associate Professor of Accounting in the Costello College of Business and holds the Northern Chapter VSCPA Professorship of Public Accounting. He currently teaches managerial and cost accounting in undergraduate and MBA programs.

Prior to joining the faculty at George Mason University, Douthett served on the faculty of Texas Christian University and worked at Exxon Corporation in various positions overseeing financial analysis and reporting for operating units in oil and gas production and chemical manufacturing.

• Published an article titled, “Do auditors protect shareholders against financial expropriation by corporate insiders?” in The Journal of American Academy of Business in 2020.   
• Published an article titled, “Do auditors provide compliance assurance for regulatory requirements besides verification of information in the annual report? Evidence from laddering arrangements” in the Academy of Accounting & Financial Studies Journal in 2020.   
• Published an article titled, “The constitutionality of uncompensated 179D(d)(4) allocations by state, local, and municipal government building owners” (coauthored with Jon Duchac and Arthur Petzel) in The ATA Journal of Legal Tax Research 2018. 
• Received the Endowed Professorship from Northern Chapter Virginia Society of CPAs from 2017 to 2021. 
• Presented the paper titled, “Leveraged Recapitalizations Under Revised Pushdown Accounting Guidance” and the paper titled “Financial Effects of Reduced Crude Oil Prices Across the Oil and Gas Industry”at the Academy of Business Research in New Orleans, Louisiana in March in 2017 (with coauthors Anthony Amoruso and Jonathan Duchac).
• Received a University Service Award from George Mason’s School of Business in 2017.
• Presented the paper titled, “Do Auditors Protect Against Expropriation by Corporate Insiders? Evidence from the Market for New Issues” at the George Mason University, School of Business, Accounting Workshop Series in Fairfax, Virginia in 2016 (with coauthor Ling Lisic).
• Presented the paper titled, “Assurance Services, Home-Country Litigation Frameworks, and Auditor Reputation Premiums” at The Fourth International Conference of Journal of International Accounting Research and Accounting, Organizations & Society in Augsburg, Germany in 2016.
• Received a University Service Award from George Mason University School of Business in 2016.
• Was honored as president of the Northern Chapter Virginia Society of CPAs from the Northern Chapter Virginia Society of CPAs in 2016.
• Received the Endowed Professorship from Northern Chapter Virginia Society of CPAs in 2016.

• Selected to serve as the Northern Chapter Virginia Society CPA Professor of Public Accounting. The Northern Chapter Virginia Society CPA Chair of Public Accounting was established to foster closer relations between the academic and practice community. Professor Douthett was selected to hold the chair by a committee from the School of Business and the Northern Chapter of the Virginia Society of CPA's in recognition of his commitment to the academy and the accounting profession.

• Presented the paper titled “Shareholder Expropriation and the Provision of Assurance Services in the Market for New Issues” at the Mason Entrepreneurship Research Conference in Fairfax, Virginia.
