Biography

Michael Ferri was a longstanding finance faculty member at George Mason University and also served as the Foundation Chair in Finance. He held academic positions at the University of Kentucky, the University of South Carolina, and John Carroll University prior to joining George Mason University. At Mason, Ferri won the MBA Teacher of the Year Award and was recognized as Outstanding Faculty Member.

Ferri is the co-author with Frank Fabozzi and Franco Modigliani of several editions of the Foundations of Financial Markets and Institutions (Prentice-Hall). He was ranked 120th among 17,601 authors who published in the "26 Core Finance Journals" from 1959 to 2008. His academic and practitioner publications relate to high-yield bonds, corporate earnings, money markets, mergers, stock market changes, mutual funds, and short selling.

In 1997, Ferri was the Dale Coenen Visiting Professor in Finance at the Darden School of the University of Virginia. From June 1997 to December 1998, he was a Senior Research Scholar at the Securities and Exchange Commission. From 2000 to 2001, he was the Vice-President for Economic Research and Deputy Chief Economist of the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Ferri served as a consultant to several financial institutions, including the SEC and the FINRA. He has been an expert or consulting witness in various courts and in arbitrations before the NASD and the NYSE. The cases have involved such issues as suitability, disclosure, mark-ups, inverse floaters, collateralized mortgage obligations, corporate re-organization, and prudent investment, among others.

He earned an AB from Xavier University, MA from the University of Notre Dame, and PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
